What Is Man Morning?

Man Morning started about 8 years ago in Los Angeles.

Every Thursday morning at 7 AM, a group of busy guys would meet for an hour-long hike.

They met at 7 AM for a hike instead of at 7 PM at a bar.

They found that their conversations over coffee were different than the ones they had over cocktails.

It was a perfect and empowering way to start their day.

The men came from different backgrounds, ages, and professions.

Some were married, some were single.

Some had kids, others didn’t.

Some ran their own businesses, others worked for companies.

For an hour, they would switch their phones to airplane mode and hike.

They discussed everything from relationships to business to personal finances and what was really going on in their lives.

No topic was off-limits.

During the weekly hikes, the men:

  • Encouraged one another

  • Provided feedback on ideas

  • Held each other accountable

  • Called each other up (instead of out)

  • Pushed each other to be the best versions of themselves

In short, they made each other better.

Since Man Morning was founded, the men:

  • Became happier and more fulfilled

  • Made more money and increased their business acumen and network

  • Experienced a greater sense of community

  • Improved personal relationships (marriage, partnerships, and parenting.)

  • Traveled together across the world and hosted retreats

  • Got in great physical shape

  • And more

8 years later, the Man Morning is still going strong.

The goal of this newsletter is simple – to provide you with some Man Morning in your inbox every week.

You can expect insight, powerful questions, stories, and light bulb moments to help you get better.

How To Have Your Own Man Morning

STEP 1: Gather a group of 3 to 6 growth minded men (i.e., they want to get better).

STEP 2: Schedule a time and location to meet for your first gathering.

STEP 3: Walk, talk, share, listen and connect.

Key Principles

3 to 6 People: We’ve found 3 to 6 people to be ideal. Less than three, it’s just two dudes talking. More than 6, multiple conversations start to take place.

Begin Early: Odds are if you do it early, it will happen. We’ve found if it happens in the evening, the tone may change due to alcohol, location, family responsibilities or fatigue.

Movement: Good things happen while in motion. We suggest walking or a light hike where the whole pack can stay together.

1 Hour: We’ve found one hour to be the sweet spot of time for Man Mornings.

Weekly: We suggest meeting weekly to maintain momentum and flow. At minimum, groups should meet twice a month.

Rotating Captains: Each week a different “captain” is responsible for confirming the meetup and providing a theme or question for the session.

Use a theme or question from a Man Morning newsletter issue. Two great questions to ask:

  1. What are you celebrating (personally or professionally)?

  2. What are you navigating (personally or professionally)?

Low Tech: We suggest phones in airplane mode for the duration of the Man Morning session to ensure everyone is present and contributing.

No Sarcasm: Sarcastic humor has a way of getting in the way of human connection, trust building and downplaying important matters.

Call Up, Not Out: Man Morning is was formed to lift each other up and to support the group. To that end, the tone should be honest, positive and encouraging.

Confidentiality: What happens at Man Morning stays at Man Morning. This is a safe space for men to share potentially vulnerable or proprietary information and for that reason confidentiality is a must.

Keep It Intentional: No selling, no nonsense.
