This approach is common and makes sense. It’s good to know what you want.
However, only focusing on what you want doesn’t mean that you’re going to get it.
It all comes down to lag measures and lead measures.
As explained in the brilliant book The 4 Disciplines of Execution, lag measures are the results you want to achieve. The end goal.
Lag measures are what you want. Either you meet your goal, or you don’t.
On the flip side, lead measures are the actions you take to meet your goal. This can predict success or failure.
Lead measures are how you get what you want.
Here's a great way to think about it: Although you can’t control whether you get sick (lag measure), you can control your diet, fitness, and preventative checkups (lead measures).
Focusing on lag measures is easy. State a goal and be done with it.
Focusing on lead measures requires you taking responsibility and measuring your daily, weekly, or monthly activities.
Here are some simple examples:
Long story short, identify exactly what you want.
Then, identify the daily or weekly actions that will make it happen and do them.
When you focus on lead measures, your chances of accomplishing your goal drastically increase.

Don’t wait for an arbitrary day on the calendar (i.e., birthday, New Year, sober October, etc.) to start attacking your goals. Start today.
