Motivation, humor, and honesty from a man actively dodging a midlife crisis so you can too.

I'm not gonna get that again.

That's what I was thinking after a conversation last week.

I was talking to a woman probably in her mid-twenties. Good head on her shoulders.

She told me she's heading to a top program to get her MBA this fall.

We chatted, and as I listened to her talk, I could see and feel the excitement in her.

Her nervous system was good.

Calm. Open. Energized.

She wasn't cocky. She was just full. Excited about a life she hadn't lived yet.

The path ahead of her seemed like anything was possible.

After we said our goodbyes, I noticed how the conversation made me feel.

At first, I wondered if I was jealous of the journey ahead of her.

But it wasn't jealousy.

It was appreciation.

Like watching something I used to be.

Twenty-something.

Excited.

Not sure where the road went and not too worried about it.

There's a version of me that had that same nervous system.

Different program.

Different city.

Different decade.

Same energy.

Same optimism.

I don't remember it feeling like anything special at the time.

But I do remember it didn't feel heavy.

It felt light.

It felt right.

With hindsight, and a few gray hairs, you realize you don't know you're in it while you're in it.

You just think that's how life feels.

Then one day you're listening to someone else describe the beginning of their story, and you realize yours is no longer beginning.

It's different.

She was excited about the future.

I was quietly appreciating the past.

I'm happy for her.

I mean that.

And there was a moment of acceptance.

I'm not gonna get that again.

That chapter of life.

And that's okay.

Because I don't want to be twenty-five again.

I don't want the uncertainty.

I don't want the lack of perspective.

I don't want to relearn the lessons life has already taught me.

What I miss isn't being young.

It's remembering what possibility felt like.

Every decade has its own kind of optimism.

My twenties were fueled by possibility.

This chapter is fueled by perspective.

Maybe the lesson isn't to wish for that chapter back.

Maybe it's to remember that every chapter deserves the same sense of possibility.
