Welcome to Man Morning, a weekly check-in for men who lead at work, at home, and in life.

You’re only as fast as your environment.

I recently went for a run in Central Park.

I used to live in New York, and every time I'm back, I hit the same loop.

But this time, I got dragged into a faster gear.

There were so many people running at a strong pace around me that it pushed me.

My mile splits were much faster than when I run at home in LA alone.

It got me thinking about why we all need pacers in our lives.

In running, pacers set the pace.

They keep you from going out too fast or too slow.

They make sure you don’t quit when it gets hard.

Your environment sets your pace whether you like it or not.

Run alone, and you’ll settle into a pace that “gets the job done.”

Run with people who are stronger, faster, or more experienced and you’ll realize you’ve got more in the tank than you thought.

This applies to everything:

  • The guy who’s serious about fitness takes group classes, hires a trainer, or trains with people who push him.

  • The business owner who's growing surrounds himself with other builders.

  • The father who wants to be an incredible dad connects with men who take that role seriously.

We’re talking about the people who raise your bar.

Who push you in the areas that matter most like health, money, family, mindset.

Here’s where most people tap out:

Sometimes you’ve gotta pay for the push.

I’m talking about fitness trainers, consultants, financial advisors, coaches, etc..

That check you write is an investment in a faster pace.

Other times these folks are part of your community.

I meet with my Man Morning crew every Thursday at 8 AM for a walk and talk.

Same guys. Same commitment. Different conversations that keep me sharp.

It’s important to remember that no one who has accomplished anything of significance did it alone.

Neither should you.

The question isn’t whether you need people to push you. You do.

The real question is whether you’re going to commit to finding them or hiring them.

Look around.

Who’s setting the pace in the areas that matter most to you?

If you can’t name anyone, you’re not just running alone you’re running in circles.
