🪓 BREAK THE FRAME

When entrepreneur and rapper Jay Z first met the multi-billionaire former owner of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets at the Four Seasons hotel in New York City, he learned a powerful lesson that changed his life.

Over the previous 10 years, Jay Z had stayed at the same Four Seasons in midtown Manhattan multiple times.

He figured, based on his status and income, that he always stayed in the best room on the property - at the top level.

However, when he went to meet the multi-billionaire oligarch, he was escorted to a suite that he’d never been to before.

He didn’t even know it existed.

This meeting broke Jay Z’s frame.

The lesson he said he learned from this was:

“There's always an extra level you don't know about."

There was an extra level even Jay Z didn’t know about.

A frame is how you see, approach, and interact with the world.

It’s your mindset, routines, and consistent behavior as it relates to your work, relationships, finances, health, and more.

Some of your life frameworks lead to wins. These are assets.

Others can cause conflict and lead to friction. These are liabilities.

Another way to put it - a frame is your life’s operating system.

Now and then, like Jay Z, we encounter something that can completely break our frames.

It can be a trip abroad to a developing country where you see communities in need of clean water and food, and you realize how much you’ve taken for granted.

It can be the shocking news that your parents are getting divorced after 30 years of marriage when you thought everything between them was great.

Or it could be meeting an extremely famous person and you’re blown away how different they are than you thought.

The thing about “breaking a frame” is that once you experience one, you never see things the same again.

It’s as if you’re seeing the world through new eyes and have downloaded updated software that may no longer work well with outdated applications.

To stay sharp, and to keep growing and learning, it’s important to regularly break your frame.

The good news is that this doesn’t have to be extreme and definitely doesn’t require meeting a multi-billionaire oligarch.

This can be added into your everyday life with just a little effort.

Here are some simple examples of how you can regularly break your frame:

Work from home? Or sick of going to the office? Once a week, work from a cafe or co-working space for a change of pace.

Change your drive home routine. Take a new route. Turn down a new street. Take the long way.

Instead of having date night with your wife, try a date morning. Pick an amazing activity to jump start your day together to create connection.

If you love to read non-fiction books, switch up your next read with some fiction.

If you’ve got into the routine of ending the day with an alcoholic beverage, take 30 days off and replace that cocktail, beer, or wine with a mocktail or herbal tea to see how you feel.

Try a new recipe. If you have your go-to meals that you like to cook, switch it up and make something new from a cookbook.

Spice up your sex life. Change up how you initiate and participate in intimacy with your wife. Get creative and mix it up.

Switch your sweat. If your workouts normally consist of the same thing every time, go to a new fitness class instead.

In a nutshell, you can “break your frame” by noticing the things you do on autopilot and intentionally do things differently.
