🌧️ IT’S JUST WATER
A journalist found himself reporting a story in Juneau, Alaska.
To get a better feel for the town, community, and local culture, he went for a walk.
One thing he quickly learned was that it rains a lot in Juneau.
Due to the geography of the city, the Alaskan capital has more than 230 days a year with some type of precipitation.
This day was no different. It was raining and didn’t look like it would stop any time soon.
The journalist borrowed a massive umbrella from his hotel. He did his best to stay dry as he walked up and down the streets.
During the walk however, something caught his attention. Something just didn't seem right.
Then it hit him.
No one, except for him, was using an umbrella. But why?
What did they know that he didn’t?
Being curious, he approached an older local who wore a work jacket and eyeglasses.
The man’s glasses were covered with large beads of water from the rain and this didn’t seem to bother him one bit.
“Excuse me,” the journalist said. “I’m not from here.”
The old man looked up and said, “I know.”
“I noticed that no one is using an umbrella,” he continued. “Why is that?”
Bemused, the old man thought about the question for a moment.
Then, he took a step closer to the journalist and said, “You know man, it’s just water.”
Before the journalist could respond, the old man walked away.
It’s just water.
Those three words hit him like a Sonny Liston jab.
They hit him literally, philosophically, and existentially.
Those simple words - it’s just water - reminded him that many of the challenges in life are "just water."
Rain is temporary, as are storms, and eventually, the water will dry and the storm will pass.
Instead of trying to avoid the rain, the man realized that sometimes it's important to embrace it and let yourself get wet.
Only then can we truly appreciate the sunshine.
