⚠️ The War Is Over
“Why don’t you wear flip-flops?”
My wife asked me this question after we started dating over 10 years ago.
“Just in case I have to defend myself or get up out of here real fast, I don’t want to slip,” I responded.
She laughed.
Then she realized that I was serious.
“When was the last time you got in a fight?” she asked.
I couldn’t give her an answer because I couldn’t remember.
It was that long ago.
She didn’t push the point, but that conversation stayed with me.
It made me think about how I was continuing to unconsciously do things that didn't serve the current version of me.
If you read my book Stop Living on Autopilot, you know that my heightened sense of awareness is no secret.
I hear what’s not said.
Put dots together others can't see.
And can pick up on energy others are oblivious to.
This has been my superpower professionally as a speaker, journalist, and coach.
Personally? Not so much.
I’ll never forget a therapist telling me years ago:
“The ‘war’ is over. It’s ok to let down your guard. You’re safe.”
Tough but valuable advice.
I’ve come to learn that lowering your guard isn't defeat, it's liberation.
It allows you to be truly present without having “apps” running all the time in the background.
Maybe today you also need to hear these 2 words so you can move forward to the current version of you:
You’re safe.
Breaking news: I've been a flip-flop wearer for quite a few years now which means I wear them every now and then.
When my wife sees me in them she smiles.
Do I feel vulnerable when I wear them?
Sometimes.
Do I always have a pair a sneakers nearby? It’s possible.
And still, the war is over.
I’m safe.
🎮 Pick Up The Controller
Life is like the best video game ever, it has amazing graphics, infinite amounts of levels, a huge map and this ridiculous great freedom. I just needed to pick up the controller.
