Man Morning #5 - 5 men you need in your life
Argue with smart people, build your team, and do they make you better?
GM. This is Man Morning - the newsletter that provides you with insights and powerful questions to help you live an interesting life.
Something to consider before we begin:
The prominent people in your life are the ones you spend time with. Not the people you listen to on podcasts, read, or don’t know (Bonus if your friends host podcasts and write great books).
In today’s issue:

5️⃣ MEN YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE

In a previous edition of Man Morning, we asked the question:
What shows up when you show up? Do things get better? Or do they get worse?
In this issue, we’re going to break down the 5 men you need in your life that make you better.
It’s critical to have men in your life with unique sets of skills and expertise who can encourage you, inspire you, and positively push you to be the best version of yourself.
Why?
Because no one who has accomplished anything of significance did it alone. Neither should you.
A great way to look at this is like a sports team. Each “player” has a unique role to play.
Here are the 5 men you need on your team:
The Facilitator
The facilitator is the floor general. He can see the big picture and support you in managing the flow of information. He’s good at knowing when you can speed things up or slow things down. In short, he can see things that you can’t.
The Playmaker
The playmaker is the Molotov Cocktail. He lights up the scoreboard and great things are happening in his life. When you need a jolt of creativity, business brainstorming or a push, he is your person. He moves fast and doesn’t have much patience for indecision. This man is the person that reminds you that if you miss a shot keep shooting.
The Encourager
The “role player” is one of the most underestimated men you can have in your life. He’s the person who does the work that many don’t see. If it was a sporting event, he probably wouldn’t regularly show up in the post-game stats. But when he’s around, you always seem to be at your best. During tough spells he supports you with perspective and his unwavering commitment.
The Bruiser
As much as you love the Bruiser, you may equally hate him. His genius is holding you accountable to what you said you were going to do. If you tell him you’re writing a book or starting a new project in the backyard, he’ll ask questions like, “When will it be finished?” He's metric-based and measures success by the progress you do or don’t make.
The Rock
The Rock is the veteran. When all hell is breaking loose, this man helps you remember what’s most important. He makes sure you don’t mistake the forest for the trees. He knows that goals are great but sometimes we can lose sight of why we are doing whatever we are doing in the first place. You need him to keep you grounded and supported.
So now what?
Evaluate the men you currently have on your team and see where you have any voids to fill.
Get curious about how you show up for the men in your life. What role do you play?
Long story short, spend time with people who make you better and are excited to see you win.
❓QUESTION TO ANSWER
Think about the 5 people you spend the most time with (in person or on your phone).
Ask yourself this simple question: Do they make me better?
💬 WORDS TO PONDER
Whatever you do in life, surround yourself with smart people who will argue with you.
