🥊 HOW FIGHTING & SPORTS CAN CHANGE US

There’s something about getting punched in the face by someone who wants to hurt you.

Whether it happens when you’re a kid, teenager or an adult, the punch fundamentally changes who you are.

It activates something inside of you that normally hides behind the comforts of modern life.

The seething pain of a fist smashing your face wakes you the hell up.

Fight or flight activates.

You say, “Let’s go!” with your fists up.

Or, “I should go!” while you run away.

A punch in the face reminds you that you’re alive.

At the moment of impact between a fist and your face - your bank account, job title, or zip code doesn’t matter.

It’s life at its most raw essence.

If you haven’t been punched in the face before, you’ve probably experienced something similar with sports (though nothing is quite the same as being walloped in the jaw).

It’s:

  • Someone using their full body to aggressively box you out on the basketball court so you can’t get the ball.

  • The blindsided block on the football field that knocks the air out of your lungs.

  • An aggressive slide tackle on the soccer pitch that makes you taste the grass.

  • The unexpected body check against the boards in a hockey game that causes you to see stars.

  • Having to tap out when your opponent gets you in a triangle choke in jiu-jitsu.

These also are experiences that remind you: I’m alive!

As we get older, we tend to encounter fewer experiences like these.

And that’s too bad.

There’s something a man loses when he loses healthy competition. (note: fantasy football isn’t healthy competition)

While we’re not advocating you challenge your neighbor Steve to a fistfight this weekend, we are suggesting that you find ways to activate some healthy competition in your life.

Something where you must earn it.

Where the old you shows up.

And you're reminded that you still got it.

Because you do, champ.

đź’¬ WISE WORDS

“A comfortable man is less likely to take risks, and warriors have always known that too much comfort makes men soft.”

Jack Donovan, The Way of Men

🏛️ A ROMAN FLASHBACK

Competition between men in ancient Rome was an big part of society and Roman culture.

There were a variety of physical competitions that took place like chariot racing, gladiator fights, and foot races.

The competitions could be fierce and result in severe injury or death for the competitors.

For ancient Roman men, competition was seen as a way for them to prove their worth and achieve success.

That's it for today.
