  • 🪜 Top of the ladder

  • 🫠 Obligated much?

👊 JUST ABOVE

You probably never heard of Salvador Sanchez.

However, you may be familiar with him …

Sanchez was a Mexican featherweight boxer in the 70s and early 80s.

Boxers love to talk about Sanchez.

One of his biggest fans is the former undisputed world heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson.

During an interview, Tyson described Sanchez’s style of fighting and he pointed out something interesting.

He said, “If you’re a halfway fighter, a decent fighter, you might last the distance (against him).”

Then he added, “As good as you are … he kicks your ass. He fights right above the level of the game that he’s fighting. He’s just above everybody else.”

Basically Tyson is saying that Sanchez fought just above the level of his competition whether it was high or low.

If his opponent was average, Sanchez would be just above average.

If his opponent was a champion, he would fight just above the champion.

He was just above everybody else.

Does this sound familiar?

Based on this story, a powerful question to consider is:

What level am I playing at?

To answer this question, take an honest look at your surroundings.

Are you surrounding yourself with the average or the exceptional?

It’s important to remember that if you ever find yourself on top of a pile of manure, the view may be nice, but you’re still on top of crap.

Simply put, in order to ensure that the best is ahead, you have to spend time with better men.

We’re talking about allies and the 5 men who make you better.

The hardest part about spending time with better men is that it requires more of you.

It holds up a mirror to what you are (or are not} doing in your life.

Being around allies provides accountability.

It can stretch you to the point of discomfort.

These men will push you, but they’ll also encourage you.

They’ll challenge you, but they’ll also root for you.

If you don’t have these types of men in your life right now, until you do, surround yourself with better books, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc.

To be clear, this post is not meant to slight Sanchez.

He was no slouch. While he may have fought just above the level of competition, he still won his fights.

A lot of them. Nearly 50.

As WBC featherweight champion, he successfully defended his title 10 times. He only lost once in his career.

Sadly, Salvador Sanchez died a tragic death when his Porsche hit a truck on a highway in Mexico in 1982.

He was just 23.

Over 40 years since his death, we’re still talking about him.

“There is perhaps nothing worse than reaching the top of the ladder and discovering that you’re on the wrong wall.”

Joseph Campbell

🫠 OBLIGATED MUCH?

5 signs you may be living a life that others expect of you:

  1. You constantly worry about letting others down.

  2. It's extremely hard for you to speak up about what you want and don't want.

  3. You feel guilty pursuing your dreams.

  4. The critical inner voice in your head prevents you from even starting.

  5. You please others to avoid short-term pain but underestimate the pain of living a life of regret.

That's it for today.
