💬 WHY THE PAIN?

“The question is not why the addiction, but why the pain?”

Dr. Gabor Mate

🪫 SMALL VICES CAN KILL BIG DREAMS

Addiction is a powerful force that can turn a small vice into a full-blown problem that can crush your dreams.

It can be easy to fall into the trap of seeking out comfort, or pleasure, to decrease stress, numb ourselves, or to avoid feeling what needs to be felt.

This could look like having a few drinks after work.

Engaging in recreational drug use.

Or, turning to pornography as a release.

Some of these behaviors may seem normal by societal standards.

However, what starts out as an innocent action for some, can turn into a full-blown addiction that could turn your life upside down.

It's important to be honest with ourselves about how these habits can negatively impact our lives - even if on the surface things are fine.

It’s only then that we can face the vices head on before they become larger problems.

Think about any behavior you do that negatively impacts your life.

The ones that go against who you are as a man at the core.

Then ask yourself:

  • Is having one more drink going to take priority over playing a game with my kids?

  • Will masturbating to pornography destroy intimacy with my wife?

  • Will recreational drug use sabotage my career goals?

What are the stakes in your life? What could you lose?

If you have a small vice that isn’t so small anymore, or one that has already spiraled out of control, it’s time to seek out help and lean on your Allies.

Like the coffee bean story we shared about Damon West, there’s a path forward.

Don’t let a small vice kill a big dream.

🕳️ THE NATURE OF ADDICTION

In a great conversation with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, Dr. Gabor Mate talks about the prevalence and nature of addiction in society.

The conversation digs into:

  • Childhood trauma and how parents can be more aware of what causes it

  • Research on personality traits that link to chronic disease

  • How stress burdens the body

  • And much more

That’s it for today.
